Samuel Bunner
Location: West Virginia
Age at the time of arrest: 51
Date of sentencing: June 2024
Summary:
Samuel Bunner pleaded guilty to bank fraud and aggravated identity theft after stealing $1,906,229 from an elderly man suffering from dementia. Bunner has been sentenced to 121 months in federal prison and five years of supervised release.
Bunner befriended the victim at a local VFW they both attended. Over time, Bunner convinced our victim to sign over his power of attorney. Once signed, Bunner defrauded our victim by selling his real estate, deliberately emptied all his investment and bank accounts, and even opened up a credit card in his name. With his stolen funds, Bunner purchased homes, multiple vehicles, and thousands of various consumer goods. On top of his prison sentence, Bunner has been ordered to pay back the $1,906,229 he took from the victim. U.S. Attorney for Northern West Virginia William Ihlenfeld stated the following about the victim: ““He’s (the victim) in a home where he receives full-time care but the sad thing is he was actually receiving a higher level of care because he saved for his whole life but he’s no longer able to afford (that care) because a lot of this money is gone.”
