Summary:
Karl Hampton was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison followed by 3 years of supervised release after stealing $1.2 million from an elderly woman with dementia.
Karl Hampton was working as an exterminator when he befriended the victim, an 86-year-old widowed woman with dementia. Over a short time, Hampton successfully convinced the victim that he would take care of her both personally and financially. Hampton held himself out to the woman and others as her “son” or “personal representative”. Hampton had the victim sign over her power of attorney, named him in her trust fund, and listed him in her will. Hampton then proceeded to steal over $1.2 million from the victim. With the victim’s money, Hampton bought a car, a luxury SUV, and a diamond ring. Hampton often spent $1,000 per day in cash buying lottery tickets.
