The attached U.S. Department of Justice Press release describes that between 2012 and 2018, Byars, along with a co-conspirator, stole the life savings of incapacitated wards while Byars served as their court-appointed guardian. In total, Byars and her co-conspirator stole over $1 million from at least 120 incapacitated wards. The attached Philadelphia Inquirer article dated August 18, 2024 explains that Byars stole approximately $132,000 from a 78-year-old, blind, nonverbal woman with dementia who needed a feeding tube. The article further explains that Byars was found dead in her home on August, 9, 2024 and her death is being investigated as a suicide. This is one of the worst fraudulent guardianship cases our Center has found.
